Dollma Mosque is one of the most atmospheric corners of Krujë Castle, a quiet sanctuary tucked among stone walls and historic houses. Built in the mid‑18th century by the influential Dollma family, it served as the main place of worship for the castle’s residents and remains one of the best‑preserved Ottoman religious structures in Albania. Its modest size and elegant proportions give it a gentle, intimate character that contrasts with the fortress’s rugged surroundings. Inside, visitors find a beautifully simple prayer hall. The mihrab is delicately carved, framed by soft geometric motifs typical of Ottoman craftsmanship. The wooden ceiling, supported by slender beams, creates warm acoustics that once amplified the imam’s voice during prayer. One of the most interesting details is the women’s gallery, a small upper platform that reflects traditional social customs within historic Albanian mosques. The mosque’s courtyard adds to its charm. Shaded by old trees and surrounded by traditional stone houses, it offers a peaceful pause during a walk through the castle complex. Though no longer used for regular worship, Dollma Mosque stands as a quiet witness to Krujë’s multicultural past and the everyday life that once unfolded within its walls.

Location

It is located in Kruja, about 30 kilometers north of Tirana, in northern Albania. The address is Rruga Kala, inside Kalaja e Krujes, Kruje, Albania. Some people call it Dollma Tekke because it was used both as a mosque and a Bektashi tekke, a place for Sufi gatherings. It sits right within the castle walls, close to the old houses and just a short walk from the main museums. The mosque itself is small and simple, with a modest minaret and a quiet courtyard, which makes it very different from the big Ottoman mosques you see in other cities. It has been restored several times over the centuries and today it gives you a nice sense of the spiritual life that existed inside the fortress. Right next to it is Kruja Castle itself, the famous hilltop fortress of national hero Skanderbeg. Inside the castle you can visit the Skanderbeg Museum with its armor and history exhibits, and the Ethnographic Museum, housed in a beautiful 1764 Ottoman house of the Toptani family showing traditional life, costumes and old household tools. Just outside the castle gates you walk straight into the Old Bazaar, the cobbled market street full of carpet shops, antiques, copper work and souvenirs. From the castle walls you also get amazing panoramic views over the plain towards the Adriatic Sea.
