National Museum of Medieval Art in Korçë is one of Albania’s finest cultural institutions, offering a deep look into the country’s Byzantine and post‑Byzantine heritage. Opened in 1980 and later expanded, it holds more than 7,000 works—one of the largest icon collections in the Balkans. The building itself is striking: a modern structure designed to showcase medieval art with clarity, using clean lines and controlled lighting to highlight the brilliance of centuries‑old pigments and gold leaf. Inside, the most captivating section is the gallery dedicated to Onufri, the 16th‑century master known for his vivid “Onufrian red.” His icons, alongside works by Onufri’s school and later painters like David Selenica, reveal how Albanian iconography developed its own expressive style. Visitors can also explore carved wooden iconostases, liturgical objects, manuscripts, and fragments of church frescoes rescued from villages across southeastern Albania. A highlight is the reconstructed church interior, where icons are arranged as they would have appeared to worshippers centuries ago. This immersive space allows visitors to experience medieval art not as museum pieces but as part of a living spiritual environment.

Location

The National Museum of Medieval Art is in the southeast part of Korçë, right where the city feels quiet and walkable. You will find it on Bulevardi Fan Noli 59, Korçë 7001, Albania. It is a modern, purpose-built building and very easy to spot, not far from the city center. It was first opened in 1980 and fully reconstructed a few years ago, and today it holds over 7000 icons and religious art pieces. The location is perfect for a cultural walk. Within a few minutes you are at the Old Bazaar of Korçë, with its stone streets, cafes and souvenir shops. Close by is the famous Resurrection Cathedral, one of the biggest Orthodox cathedrals in Albania, really impressive to see. Just around the corner you have a whole cluster of other museums. The Bratko Museum of Oriental Art is right next to it, the National Museum of Education, which was the first Albanian language school, is also very close. You can also visit the Archaeological Museum of Korçë and the Gjon Mili Photography Museum. Everything is within walking distance, so you can easily see a lot in one afternoon.
