Šarena Džamija

About

Šarena Džamija, Tetovo’s Painted Mosque, is one of the most distinctive Ottoman monuments in the Balkans. Built in 1438 and lavishly restored in the 19th century, it stands out for its vivid exterior: hundreds of geometric patterns, floral motifs, and landscape scenes cover the façade like an open-air gallery. Unlike most mosques of its era, it was funded by two local sisters, a rare example of female patronage in Ottoman architecture. Inside, the mosque reveals even richer artistry. The prayer hall is wrapped in colourful frescoes depicting cities, gardens, and symbolic motifs. The most striking image is the idealised view of Mecca, painted with remarkable detail. The wooden balcony and mihrab feature fine carvings that highlight Tetovo’s tradition of skilled craftsmanship. Visitors can also see the serene courtyard with its octagonal fountain, once used for ritual cleansing. The nearby türbe, a small mausoleum, adds another layer of historical interest.
