National Museum Veles

About

National Museum Veles is one of the city’s key cultural institutions, offering a compact yet engaging journey through the region’s archaeological, ethnographic, and artistic heritage. Housed in a modern building near the Vardar River, the museum highlights Veles’ long history as a crossroads of ancient civilizations and a centre of craftsmanship. Inside, visitors can explore archaeological finds from the Neolithic and Roman periods, including pottery, tools, and fragments of everyday objects that reveal how early communities lived along the river. One of the most interesting items is a collection of Roman-era votive plaques discovered near the old trade routes, showing the city’s role as a regional stopover. The ethnographic section presents traditional Macedonian clothing, household items, and artisan tools. The embroidered garments from the Veles region stand out for their bright colours and symbolic patterns. A reconstructed traditional room offers a glimpse into domestic life from the 19th century.
