Ossuary Monument – Kosturnica
Ossuary Monument – Kosturnica is one of Veles’ most striking memorials, built in the 1970s to honour local Partisan fighters who died during the Second World War. Its bold, sculptural form resembles a cracked stone vessel, symbolising both sacrifice and rebirth. The monument stands on a hill overlooking the city, making it visible from afar and giving it a powerful presence in the landscape. Inside, the space is solemn and symbolic. The central chamber contains the ossuary itself, where the remains of fallen fighters are interred. The interior walls are decorated with reliefs and inscriptions that recount key battles and commemorate the individuals who fought for liberation. The play of light through narrow openings creates a dramatic atmosphere, enhancing the monument’s emotional impact. One of the most interesting features is the artistic approach: the monument blends brutalist architecture with expressive sculptural elements, reflecting Yugoslavia’s unique memorial style of the era. Visitors can also explore the surrounding plateau, which offers panoramic views of Veles and the Vardar River.
Veles North Macedonia
The Ossuary Monument, known locally as Kosturnica, is one of the most striking landmarks above Veles and offers the best panoramic view of the whole town. It is located just outside the city center on the hill above Veles, at R1312, 1400 Veles, North Macedonia. You can reach it easily by car or with a short walk uphill from downtown, and it sits at the entrance to the city when coming from Skopje. The monument was built in 1979 to honor the 87 partisans who died fighting for the liberation of Veles in World War II, and underneath it is a crypt with their remains. It has a very unique shape like an upside-down poppy flower. Because it is on a hill, the view from here is amazing, especially at sunset, and from there you are very close to other places to see. Down in the city you will find the National Museum of Veles, the Likoven Salon art gallery and the Jordan Hadzi Konstantinov-Dzinot Theatre, all within a few minutes drive. Nearby in the old center are the Veles Clock Tower, the historic quarter of Varnalii, the Memorial Houses of Kocho Racin and Glavinov, and the churches of St. Panteleimon and St. Nicholas. It is a perfect spot to start or finish your city tour.
