Church of St. John the Baptist is one of Kratovo’s most atmospheric sacred landmarks, set on a quiet rise above the town’s winding streets. Although modest in size, it carries deep historical roots: the church stands on the site of an older medieval sanctuary, and its present form reflects centuries of local devotion shaped by Kratovo’s mining and merchant traditions. Inside, the church reveals a warm, intimate interior. The iconostasis is its most captivating feature — a finely carved wooden screen filled with vivid icons of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and St. John the Baptist, whose feast day is one of Kratovo’s most celebrated events. The frescoes, painted in rich earth tones, depict scenes from the saint’s life, including his baptism of Christ, rendered with expressive detail. One interesting element is the church’s collection of liturgical books and objects, some preserved from earlier centuries. These items highlight Kratovo’s long-standing role as a cultural centre, where craftsmen and scribes contributed to regional religious life. The small courtyard, shaded and peaceful, offers a moment of reflection before entering the nave.

The Church of St. John the Baptist, known locally as Sveti Jovan or Sveti Jovan Otsechen, is one of the most charming small churches in Kratovo and a real hidden gem. It is located right in the historic center of Kratovo, at Kratovo 1360, North Macedonia, just a few steps from the main square and the old stone bridges. The church is small and Orthodox, built in a traditional style, and what makes it special are the beautiful frescoes that you can even see from the outside. It sits in the middle of the old town, surrounded by narrow streets and old merchant houses. Because it is so central, you have everything close by. Within a minute walk you reach the Museum of Kratovo, housed in an old Ottoman home, and the famous Kratovo Clock Tower from the 17th century. The town is known for its medieval stone bridges, and bridges like the Grofchanski Bridge and Radin Bridge are right next to the church over the Kratovo River. A little further you will find the Church of St. George and the Church of St. Nicholas, two other historic churches that are part of Kratovo's religious route, plus the old Turkish bath and many old towers. If you want to explore outside town, the stone town of Kuklica and the Lesnovo Monastery are a short drive away.
