Clock Tower Kratovo is one of the town’s most characteristic landmarks, rising above the old streets with its simple yet elegant Ottoman design. Built in the 18th century, it once served as the town’s main timekeeper, regulating daily life for merchants, miners, and travellers who passed through Kratovo’s busy market routes. Its position on a natural slope was chosen so the bell could be heard across the valley. Inside, the tower is narrow and atmospheric. A steep wooden staircase climbs through thick stone walls, giving a sense of the tower’s age and original function. The most interesting feature is the chamber where the clock mechanism once operated. Although the original gears are no longer present, the space still conveys how the tower worked before modern clocks became common. Small openings near the top offer views over Kratovo’s rooftops, bridges, and medieval tower houses. These vantage points reveal why the clock tower became both a practical tool and a symbol of civic pride.

The Clock Tower of Kratovo is one of the symbols of this little mountain town and one of the most photographed spots in the old center. You will find it at Josif Daskalov Street, Kratovo 1360, North Macedonia, right next to the small river that runs through town. It stands just above the stone bridges, in the heart of the historic quarter, so you can walk to it from anywhere downtown in a couple of minutes. The tower was built in the 17th century and is now protected as a cultural monument, cared for by the Museum of Kratovo. You cannot go inside, but it looks beautiful from the outside and adds a lot to the old town atmosphere. Around the tower there is a lot to see. Just a few steps away is the Museum of Kratovo itself, housed in an old Ottoman house with collections about local history and traditions. Right there you have the famous stone bridges of Kratovo like the Grofchanski Bridge, Radin Bridge and Argulichki Bridge, all medieval and crossing the little Kratovo River. Nearby are also the small churches of St. John the Baptist, St. George and St. Nicholas, the old Turkish bath and the many old towers that once protected the town. If you have more time, the amazing stone dolls of Kuklica and the Lesnovo Monastery are a short drive away.
