Museum of Kratovo offers a vivid introduction to one of Macedonia’s most historic small towns, known for its medieval mining heritage and unique urban architecture. Set inside a traditional Kratovo house, the museum preserves the atmosphere of an old merchant residence, with wooden balconies, stone foundations, and rooms arranged around a central hall. The archaeological collection is one of its highlights. Visitors can see artefacts from Kratovo’s mining past, including tools, ore samples, and objects used by miners who worked in the region’s rich volcanic terrain. Roman and medieval finds—coins, pottery, and metalwork—illustrate how long the town served as a regional centre of trade. The ethnographic section reveals everyday life in Kratovo through traditional clothing, household items, and beautifully crafted silver jewellery. A reconstructed living room shows how families lived in the 19th century, complete with embroidered textiles and carved wooden furniture. One of the most interesting displays focuses on Kratovo’s famous tower houses, with models and photographs explaining their defensive and residential functions.

Kratovo North Macedonia

The Museum of Kratovo is right in the old center of Kratovo, one of the most atmospheric small towns in North Macedonia. You will find it at Gjorgjija Kratovski Street bb, Kratovo 1360, North Macedonia, inside a beautiful old Ottoman house. It is in the historic core, so you can easily walk to it from anywhere in town. The museum was founded in 1993 and keeps the story of Kratovo alive with ethnological objects, old costumes, jewelry and archaeological finds from the area. Because it is in the middle of town, everything interesting is around it. Kratovo is famous for its medieval towers and stone bridges, and you can see them all on foot. Right nearby is the Kratovo Clock Tower from the 17th century, which is actually managed by the museum itself, and just a minute away are the famous stone bridges like the Grofchanski Bridge and Radin Bridge over the Kratovo River. Close by are also the old Turkish bath, the Church of St. George and the Church of St. Nicholas, and the many old merchant houses that make Kratovo feel like an open-air museum. If you have more time, the stone dolls of Kuklica and the megalithic observatory of Kokino are a short drive from town.
