The Great Hall in Winchester is one of Hampshire’s most iconic historic interiors, a rare surviving fragment of Winchester Castle. Rebuilt in the early 13th century under Henry III, it served as the ceremonial heart of royal power in medieval England. Its most famous feature is the legendary Round Table hanging on the west wall. Although actually a 13th‑century creation later painted for Henry VIII, it has long been linked to King Arthur, giving the hall a powerful blend of myth and history. Inside, the hall’s soaring arcades, tall windows and finely carved Purbeck stone columns create an atmosphere of grandeur. This was once the setting for royal feasts, court gatherings and political negotiations. The space is remarkably intact, allowing visitors to appreciate its scale and elegance much as medieval guests would have. Another highlight is Queen Eleanor’s Garden, a peaceful reconstruction of a 13th‑century herb and flower garden adjoining the hall. Its geometric layout, fragrant plants and quiet corners offer a glimpse into medieval horticulture and courtly life.

The Great Hall stands at the top of the High Street in the historic centre of Winchester in Hampshire. You’ll find it on Castle Avenue, Winchester, SO23 8UD, right by the old Westgate. It is all that remains of the once-mighty Winchester Castle and is famous for the huge Round Table hanging on its wall, linked for centuries to the legends of King Arthur. The hall itself is a fine example of 13th-century architecture with soaring arches and stained-glass windows. Just a short walk away is Winchester Cathedral, one of the longest and most impressive medieval cathedrals in Europe. Nearby you’ll also find the ruins of Wolvesey Castle, the old Bishop’s Palace, and the Westgate Museum housed in the medieval city gate. Winchester College, England’s oldest public school, is close by too, and the City Museum tells the story of the ancient capital. Everything is compact and walkable, so you can easily combine The Great Hall with the cathedral, the castle ruins and a leisurely explore of Winchester’s charming streets.
