Leicester Museum & Art Gallery is a wide-ranging, family-friendly museum housed in a stately 19th-century building. Opened in 1849 as one of the UK's first public museums, it sits along the famous tree-lined pedestrian avenue of New Walk, just a short walk south of central Leicester. Inside, you can discover everything from international fine art and German Expressionist paintings to real dinosaur skeletons, local geology, and Ancient Egyptian mummies. The full address is 53 New Walk, Leicester, LE1 7EA. Because it is located right near the heart of the city, there are plenty of interesting places to explore nearby. Strolling south along New Walk leads you toward Victoria Park and the Attenborough Arts Centre, a vibrant venue featuring contemporary art exhibitions, theatre performances, and workshops. Heading just ten minutes northwest into the historic city center brings you to Leicester Cathedral and the popular King Richard III Visitor Centre, where you can learn the incredible story of the king's life and the discovery of his lost grave. Right next to the cathedral stands the Medieval Guildhall, one of the best-preserved timber-framed halls in England.
