The National Space Centre in Leicester is one of the UK’s most distinctive science attractions, instantly recognisable by its futuristic Rocket Tower—an impressive 42‑metre structure housing real spacecraft. Opened in 2001, it was designed to bring space science to life through immersive exhibits, hands‑on exploration, and dramatic storytelling. The National Space Centre is an award-winning science museum and educational charity packed with interactive galleries, rockets, and the UK's largest dome planetarium. Housed in a striking futuristic building with a distinctive 42-metre semi-transparent Rocket Tower, it sits along the River Soar just north of central Leicester. The full address is Exploration Drive, Leicester, LE4 5NS. Right next door on the exact same site, you will find the Abbey Pumping Station, Leicester’s museum of science and technology. Housed in a grand Victorian beam-engine house, it showcases four massive operational steam-powered beam engines alongside vintage vehicles and industrial history exhibits.Just across the river lies Abbey Park, a lovely green space featuring formal gardens, a boating lake, and the historic ruins of Leicester Abbey alongside the medieval remnants of Cavendish House.Heading about two miles south into central Leicester brings you to a cluster of major historic attractions. You can visit Leicester Cathedral and the King Richard III Visitor Centre, where you can explore the life, death, and archaeological discovery of the monarch. Nearby, you will also find the Medieval Guildhall, the Jewry Wall Roman ruins, and the historic Leicester Castle complex.
