Northamptonshire Ironstone Railway Trust

The Northamptonshire Ironstone Railway Trust, based in the old Hunsbury Hill quarry south of Northampton, preserves one of the county’s most important industrial legacies: the ironstone railways that once fed Britain’s steelworks. The site is atmospheric, with original quarry buildings, tracks and machinery still in place, giving visitors a strong sense of how the industry operated during its peak in the early 20th century. Inside the museum sheds, you’ll find a varied collection of narrow‑gauge locomotives, wagons and engineering tools used to haul ironstone from quarry face to processing plant. Several locomotives have been restored to working order, each illustrating different eras of industrial design—from compact steam engines to rugged diesel machines. Photographs, maps and quarrymen’s equipment help tell the story of the tough, skilled labour that shaped Northamptonshire’s landscape. A highlight is the heritage railway itself. On running days, visitors can ride in restored wagons along a short stretch of track, experiencing the scale, sound and movement of quarry transport. The original workshop, with its heavy tools and preserved fittings, offers an authentic glimpse into daily maintenance work.
