Niš

Niš is one of the oldest cities in Europe and one of Serbia's most important historical and cultural destinations. Located on the banks of the Nišava River, it has been continuously inhabited for more than two thousand years. The city is best known as the birthplace of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great and offers visitors an impressive combination of ancient archaeology, Ottoman heritage and vibrant modern life. The city's most famous landmark is Niš Fortress, a remarkably preserved Ottoman stronghold built in the early eighteenth century on the foundations of earlier Roman and medieval fortifications. Another fascinating attraction is the Nazi Concentration Camp "Crveni Krst" Museum, which documents one of the best-preserved wartime camps in the Balkans. Among the city's religious landmarks, the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity stands out with its impressive nineteenth-century architecture and beautifully decorated interior. The nearby Church of St. Panteleimon and other historic churches reflect the city's long Christian tradition.
