Harewood House

About

Harewood House, just north of Leeds, is one of England’s finest stately homes and a landmark of 18th‑century design. Built between 1759 and 1771 for Edwin Lascelles, it was designed by John Carr with interiors by Robert Adam and set within sweeping landscapes crafted by Lancelot “Capability” Brown. The house is renowned for its exquisite Robert Adam ceilings, Chippendale furniture, and an outstanding art collection featuring works by Turner, Reynolds, and El Greco. Beyond the house, visitors can explore over 100 acres of gardens, including the Italianate Terrace, the Himalayan Garden, and a tranquil lakeside walk. Harewood also embraces contemporary culture, hosting exhibitions in its Terrace Gallery and welcoming artists such as Antony Gormley and Henry Moore. Today, the Harewood House Trust preserves the estate while acknowledging its historic links to the transatlantic slave trade, ensuring its legacy is explored with honesty and reflection. A place of beauty, history, and dialogue, Harewood House remains a cultural jewel of Yorkshire.
