York Gate Garden in Adel, on the northern edge of Leeds, is a celebrated one‑acre garden regarded as one of the finest examples of Arts and Crafts design in the country. Created in the 1950s by the Spencer family, it was carefully laid out as a series of “garden rooms,” each with its own character, linked by hedges, paths, and architectural features that create a sense of intimacy and discovery. From the White Garden and Kitchen Garden to the Sun Terrace and wildflower meadow, every corner offers seasonal interest, with tulips, exotics, and meadow blooms in spring and summer, followed by rich autumn colour and winter structure. After the garden was entrusted to the charity Perennial in 1994, it has been preserved and expanded with a café, plant nursery, and gift shop, ensuring its legacy continues.
