Harewood Castle

About

Harewood Castle, a striking 14th‑century ruin, stands within the grounds of the Harewood Estate just north of Leeds. Built by Sir William de Aldeburgh after receiving a royal licence to fortify his manor in 1366, the castle was designed as both a residence and a symbol of status. Its rectangular keep, flanked by corner towers and a chapel above the entrance, once overlooked the Wharfe Valley as a powerful statement of medieval authority. Though it was inhabited until the early 17th century, financial decline and changing fashions in domestic architecture led to its abandonment, and by the mid‑1600s it was already being dismantled for stone. Today the castle survives as a romantic ruin, its weathered walls and towers offering a glimpse into Yorkshire’s feudal past. Artists such as J. M. W. Turner were inspired by its dramatic silhouette, and recent conservation efforts have helped stabilise the structure for future generations. While access to the interior is restricted, the castle remains a compelling landmark within the Harewood landscape, linking the grandeur of Harewood House with the deeper medieval roots of the estate.
