Basilica of Superga
The Basilica of Superga rises above Turin on a hill that offers one of the most breathtaking panoramas of the city and the Alps. Commissioned by Victor Amadeus II and designed by the brilliant architect Filippo Juvarra, it was completed in 1731 as a monumental expression of gratitude after a decisive military victory. Its grand Baroque façade, crowned by an elegant dome and flanked by twin bell towers, creates a striking silhouette visible from miles away. Inside, the basilica reveals a harmonious blend of marble, light, and sweeping architectural lines. Beneath it lies the Royal Tombs of the House of Savoy, adding historical depth to its spiritual significance. Superga is also remembered for the tragic 1949 plane crash that claimed the lives of the Grande Torino football team, commemorated by a memorial behind the basilica.
