Grote Markt is the vibrant heart of Mechelen, a historic square framed by centuries‑old façades that showcase Renaissance, Rococo, and later architectural styles. Dominated by the soaring St. Rumbold’s Tower on one side and the elegant Town Hall on the other, the square has long been the city’s central gathering place. Once a bustling medieval marketplace, it remains lively today, especially on Saturday mornings when stalls fill the open space with local produce and regional treats. The square became fully pedestrianised in 2004, revealing archaeological traces such as an old well and a thirteenth‑century street beneath its cobblestones. Surrounded by cafés, terraces, and beautifully preserved guild houses, Grote Markt blends Mechelen’s rich past with a warm, welcoming atmosphere that invites visitors to linger and explore.

The Grote Markt is located at the heart of Mechelen’s historic centre, 2800 Mechelen, Belgium, serving as the city's vibrant main square. Dominated by the towering St. Rumbold’s Cathedral to the northwest and flanked by the ornate Town Hall (Stadhuis) complex on the east side, it features a central statue of Margaret of Austria amid 16th-18th century guildhouses with crow-stepped gables. Nearby lie St. Peter and St. Paul Church (steps away on Keizerstraat), Church of Our Lady of Leliendaal along the Bruul shopping street, the belfry and carillon, riverside Dyle paths, Museum Hof Van Busleyden, lively cafés, restaurants, and pedestrian streets leading to other landmarks like the Beguinages—all within Mechelen’s compact old town.
