Brusselpoort is the last surviving city gate of Mechelen, an imposing 13th‑century structure that once formed part of the medieval fortifications. Originally the tallest of the city’s twelve gates, it earned the name Overste Poort, or “Superior Gate,” for its commanding height. Over time, its towers were lowered and the roof was reshaped, but the gate’s robust stonework still reflects the city’s defensive past. Standing at the edge of the historic centre where Hoogstraat meets the ring road, it has served many purposes across the centuries, from police station and customs office to artist’s studio. Today, Brusselpoort remains a striking reminder of Mechelen’s medieval heritage, offering visitors a tangible link to the city’s origins and a dramatic architectural landmark that frames the entrance to the old town.

The Brusselpoort is located at Hoogstraat 83, 2800 Mechelen, on the edge of the historic city centre where it meets the R12 ring road, serving as Mechelen’s last surviving 13th-century city gate from the original 12 entrances to the medieval walls. This Gothic landmark stands a short walk from key sights including Grote Markt with its town hall and St. Rumbold’s Cathedral (under 10 minutes away), Vismarkt and the Dijle River paths, Church of Our Lady across the Dyle, Lamot campus, Museum Hof Van Busleyden, Bruul shopping street, lively cafés along Korenmarkt, and pedestrian routes to beguinages and other churches in the compact old town.
