Vismarkt is one of Mechelen’s most characterful squares, a historic 16th‑century marketplace set along the River Dijle and long associated with the city’s fish trade. After fishmongers were moved here in 1531 due to odour complaints on the IJzerenleen, the square grew into a lively commercial hub, bordered by narrow streets and later enclosed by brick quays and iron railings. Over the centuries it evolved from a working market into a social meeting point, and by the late 20th century it was revitalised after decades of use as a parking area. Today, Vismarkt is known for its warm, inviting atmosphere, lined with cosy pubs, stylish bars, and modern restaurants that attract both locals and visitors. Its riverside setting, historic façades, and easy access via the Van Beethoven Bridge make it an appealing place to stroll, relax, and enjoy Mechelen’s vibrant urban life.

The Vismarkt is located at Vismarkt 14, 2800 Mechelen, along the northern bank of the Dijle River between Drabstraat and Nauwstraat, in the lively historic centre. This former 16th-century fish market square now buzzes with cafés, restaurants and bars, connected by the Van Beethovenbrug to Haverwerf, and sits just a short walk (5-10 minutes) from Grote Markt with its town hall and St. Rumbold’s Cathedral, the Dyle Path (Dijlepad) towpath, Bruul shopping street, Church of Our Lady of Leliendaal, Grootbrug bridge, Museum Hof Van Busleyden, and historic gems like Refuge of Villers amid pedestrian streets filled with shops and eateries.
