About

Kruidtuin is the largest public park in Mechelen’s historic centre, a serene green refuge shaped by centuries of horticultural tradition. Once the medieval garden of the Commanderij van Pitzemburg, it later evolved into an elegant 19th‑century landscape garden created for the Société Royale d’Horticulture. Today it remains a peaceful urban oasis where winding paths, mature trees, and colourful plant beds invite slow exploration. At its heart stands the statue of Rembert Dodoens, the renowned 16th‑century botanist whose Cruydenboek laid the foundations of modern herbal science. Families enjoy the playground, students gather on the lawns, and locals come to relax beneath the canopy of greenery. With entrances from the Bruul, Pitzemburgstraat, and Zandpoortvest, the Kruidtuin blends history, botany, and everyday life into one of Mechelen’s most beloved public spaces.

The Kruidtuin (Botanical Garden) is located at Bruul 129, 2800 Mechelen, at the end of the Bruul shopping street in the historic city centre, bordering the Binnendijle canal with entrances also via Pitzemburgstraat and Zandpoortvest. As Mechelen’s largest inner-city park, it stands moments from landmarks like Church of Our Lady of Leliendaal (395m away), Grote Markt with town hall and St. Rumbold’s Cathedral (under 600m), Vismarkt and Dijlepad riverside paths, Fonteinbrug bridge, Vleeshal, Clock and Watch Museum, Basilica of Our Lady of Hanswijk (135m), Commanderij van Pitzemburg (143m), lively Korenmarkt cafés, and pedestrian routes to beguinages and other churches in the compact old town.
