Arktikum

Arktikum in Rovaniemi is a striking museum and science centre that brings the Arctic’s nature, cultures, and history into vivid focus. Opened in 1992, it houses both the Arctic Centre and the Provincial Museum of Lapland, offering exhibitions that explore northern wildlife, Sámi heritage, regional history, and life in extreme climates. Its architecture is a major attraction: a 172‑metre glass corridor filled with natural light stretches toward the Ounasjoki River, while much of the exhibition space lies below ground, echoing how Arctic animals shelter beneath snow. Inside, visitors encounter immersive displays on seasonal changes, northern lights, and the rebuilding of Lapland after the Second World War. Surrounded by the Arctic Garden, the museum also provides a peaceful riverside setting ideal for walks and aurora watching.
