Lapland Forest Museum

Lapland Forest Museum, located a few kilometres from Rovaniemi’s centre, is an open‑air museum dedicated to the history of forestry and the lives of the lumberjacks who shaped Lapland from the late 19th century to the mid‑20th century. Spread across a peaceful lakeside setting, the museum features authentic cabins, workshops, stables, and saunas transferred from different parts of Lapland, each preserving the atmosphere of logging camps where workers lived and laboured in harsh northern conditions. Exhibits include original tools, horse‑drawn equipment, and early machinery that illustrate the evolution of forest work, from manual felling and timber floating to the first mechanised operations. Visitors can explore buildings such as traditional lumberjack cabins and foremen’s quarters, gaining insight into daily routines, camaraderie, and the demanding nature of winter logging. Surrounded by forest and wildlife, the museum offers a tranquil environment that complements its historical storytelling. Today it stands as the only museum in Finland devoted entirely to Lapland’s forestry heritage, preserving an essential chapter of regional life and culture.
