Sigulda New Castle

Sigulda New Castle is one of the town’s most distinctive landmarks, a Neo‑Gothic residence built in the late 19th century by the Kropotkin family. Designed to reflect the romantic tastes of the era, it features pointed arches, decorative stonework, and a picturesque silhouette overlooking the Gauja Valley. Unlike the nearby medieval ruins, the New Castle represents Sigulda’s aristocratic revival, when noble estates embraced modern comfort while preserving a sense of historic grandeur. An interesting chapter in its history came during the early 20th century, when the building was adapted for military and administrative use, including service as a writers’ retreat during the interwar period. Its interiors once held elegant salons and richly furnished rooms, fragments of which are still remembered through archival photographs. Today, the castle forms part of a cultural complex that includes restored manor buildings and artisan workshops.
