Turaida Castle is the defining landmark of the Turaida Museum Reserve, rising above the Gauja Valley with its striking red‑brick tower. Built in 1214 for the Livonian Brothers of the Sword, it served as a key defensive post controlling river routes and regional trade. Its construction marked the shift from wooden fortifications to durable stone strongholds in medieval Livonia, giving the castle both strategic and symbolic importance. Over the centuries, Turaida Castle witnessed battles, political shifts, and periods of decline. By the 18th century it had fallen into ruin, but careful archaeological work and reconstruction in the 20th century restored parts of the complex, including the iconic tower that now offers panoramic views across forests and river bends. One of the site’s most compelling stories is the legend of the Rose of Turaida, a tale of love and loyalty tied to a young woman named Maija, whose memorial lies nearby. Today, Turaida Castle stands not only as a medieval monument but as a cultural symbol, blending history, legend, and landscape into one of Latvia’s most memorable destinations.

Sigulda Latvia

Location

Turaida Castle is located in Turaida, on the right bank of the Gauja River, just a short distance from the town centre of Sigulda in Latvia. It sits within the Turaida Museum Reserve and the Gauja National Park landscape, making it easy to reach by car, bus, or a scenic walk from Sigulda. Nearby, visitors can explore the Turaida Museum Reserve, which includes the castle, Turaida Church, and several open‑air exhibitions. The famous Rose of Turaida grave, where legend says Maija is buried, is also close by and is a popular stop for photos and quiet reflection. Within easy reach are the ruins of the Livonian Order Castle and Sigulda New Castle, as well as Gutman’s Cave and the walking paths of Paradise Hill. For a more active day, the Sigulda bobsleigh track and the cable car to Krimulda offer adventure views over the same river valley that Turaida Castle overlooks.
