St.Simeon and St.Ann Orthodox Cathedral

St. Simeon and St. Ann Orthodox Cathedral is one of Jelgava’s most striking sacred buildings, distinguished by its elegant Neo‑Byzantine style and sky‑blue domes. Completed in 1890, it was built for the city’s growing Orthodox community and dedicated to two saints closely connected with family, faith, and protection. Its design reflects the architectural traditions of the Russian Empire, with ornate façades, arched windows, and a harmonious symmetry that gives the cathedral a serene, dignified presence. An interesting historical detail is its connection to the Romanov family. The cathedral was erected in memory of Tsar Alexander II, and its interior once held commemorative elements honouring the imperial dynasty. Inside, visitors can still admire richly decorated icons, gilded iconostasis work, and murals that survived periods of political upheaval. The cathedral endured significant challenges during the 20th century, including wartime damage and restrictions on religious life. Yet it remained a spiritual anchor for Jelgava’s Orthodox believers. Today, restored and active, it stands as a vibrant symbol of continuity, cultural diversity, and the city’s layered history.
