Pilssala Observation Tower is one of Jelgava’s most modern viewpoints, rising above the island landscape where the Lielupe and Driksa rivers meet. Opened in 2015, the tower was built as part of the revitalisation of Pilssala—an area once dominated by the grounds of Jelgava Castle and later shaped by floods, military use, and urban redevelopment. Its clean, contemporary design contrasts with the historic surroundings, creating a striking visual marker on the riverbank. The tower’s most interesting feature is its 360‑degree panorama, offering one of the best views of Jelgava. From the top, visitors can see the full outline of Jelgava Palace, the cathedral towers, the restored Old Town fragments, and the wide, flat landscapes of Zemgale stretching into the distance. At sunset, the tower becomes a favourite spot for photographers capturing the golden light over the rivers. Pilssala itself has a layered past—once a fortified island, later a royal estate, and today a recreational zone with walking paths, sports areas, and cultural events. The observation tower stands as a symbol of this transformation, linking Jelgava’s history with its modern identity.
Jelgava Latvia
Pilssalas skatu tornis, the Pilssala Observation Tower, is located on Pilssala, or Palace Island, in Jelgava, Latvia. The modern wooden tower rises beside the Lielupe River and offers open-air platforms with wide views over the river, Jelgava Palace, and the surrounding meadows and floodplains. It’s especially popular at sunset and during bird migration seasons when the wetlands attract diverse species. The tower sits just steps from Jelgava Palace, the 18th-century Baroque residence designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli for the Dukes of Courland. You can tour its state rooms, the Love Museum, and the ducal crypts in the basement. From the island, walking paths connect to the Lielupe River promenade and bridges leading to Pasta Island, a lively recreation area with beaches, cafes, playgrounds, and seasonal events. Nearby in central Jelgava, visit St. Trinity Church Tower for nine floors of city history exhibitions and a glass viewing deck. St. Simeon and St. Ann Orthodox Cathedral, with its blue domes and neo-Byzantine interior, is also within walking distance. The Old Town offers Academia Petrina, squares with restaurants, and easy access to parks and the Railway Museum.
