Jelgava Palace Museum and the Crypt of the Dukes of Courland form one of Latvia’s most significant historical ensembles, rooted in the legacy of the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia. The palace, designed by the renowned architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli in the mid‑18th century, was once the grand residence of Duke Ernst Johann Biron. Though heavily damaged during World War II, it remains the largest Baroque palace in the Baltics and a powerful symbol of Jelgava’s former political importance. The crypt beneath the palace is among its most fascinating features. It houses the burial vaults of the Kettler and Biron dynasties, containing more than 20 elaborately crafted sarcophagi. These metal coffins, decorated with coats of arms and symbolic motifs, offer a rare glimpse into the funerary traditions of European nobility. Despite wars, fires, and looting, many of the sarcophagi survived, making the crypt one of the best‑preserved ducal burial sites in Northern Europe.
Jelgava Latvia
The Palace Museum and Crypt of the Dukes of Courland is located in Jelgava Palace, in the centre of Jelgava town, on the banks of the Lielupe River. The palace now also houses the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, and the museum sits inside this grand baroque complex, making it easy to reach on foot from the town’s main streets and central square. Nearby, you can explore the remains of Jelgava Castle, the historic Great Square, and the surrounding streets lined with classical town houses and churches. The city’s river embankments offer pleasant walks with views of the palace and the river. Further afield, the baroque Rundāle Palace, former summer residence of the Courland dukes, lies about half an hour’s drive from Jelgava and is a popular addition to a day trip focused on ducal history and grand architecture.
