Jelgava castle

About

Jelgava Castle, once the proud residence of the Dukes of Courland, is a landmark shaped by ambition, war, and resilience. Built in the 18th century on the foundations of an earlier medieval fortress, it was designed by the famed Baroque architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli, whose work also includes Rundāle Palace and parts of St. Petersburg’s Winter Palace. Jelgava Castle became the administrative and ceremonial heart of the duchy, reflecting its rulers’ desire to project cultural and political prestige. An interesting chapter in its history came during the Napoleonic era, when the castle briefly hosted the exiled French royal family. Later, in the 19th century, it was transformed into an educational centre, housing the Jelgava Academy and later various military institutions. World War II brought devastation: the palace was heavily damaged, leaving only its outer walls and structural form. Yet even in its altered state, the castle remains the largest Baroque palace in the Baltics, a monumental reminder of the region’s aristocratic past. Today, Jelgava Castle serves as the home of the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, blending academic life with centuries of layered history.
