Podtatranské múzeum v Poprade

About

Podtatranské Museum in Poprad is one of Slovakia’s most intriguing regional museums, best known for a discovery that drew international attention: the 2,600‑year‑old tomb of a Scythian nobleman, uncovered in nearby Matejovce. This unique find, preserved in exceptional condition, is one of the most important archaeological discoveries in Central Europe and remains the museum’s star attraction. Inside, visitors can explore exhibitions that trace the cultural history of the High Tatras region—from prehistoric settlements and medieval trade routes to traditional crafts and everyday life in old Spiš. The archaeological section presents tools, jewellery, ceramics, and ritual objects that reveal how diverse cultures shaped the area. The ethnographic displays include folk costumes, wooden household items, and examples of regional craftsmanship, offering a vivid picture of mountain life. A highlight is the dedicated exhibition of the Scythian burial chamber, reconstructed with original artefacts and detailed interpretation. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions focused on local history, art, and natural heritage. Podtatranské Museum combines scientific value with strong storytelling, making it an essential stop for understanding the cultural roots of the Tatras.

Set in the gateway city to the High Tatras, Podtatranské múzeum introduces you to the natural and cultural story of the region below the mountains. The main building stands on Sobotské námestie in Poprad, with another exhibition space on Vajanského Street near the city center. Founded in the late 19th century by the Hungarian Carpathian Association, the museum preserves archaeology, history, ethnography, art, and nature collections. You can explore prehistoric artifacts, folk culture of Spiš, and exhibits on the High Tatras environment in a building that itself dates back to 1886. Step outside and you’re minutes from Poprad’s most charming sights. The museum manages the historic quarter of Spišská Sobota, where cobbled streets lead past colorful merchant houses to the 13th-century Church of St. George, once visited by Queen Elizabeth II. The modern city center around Námestie svätého Egídia offers fountains, cafés, and the Gothic Church of St. Egidius with medieval wall paintings. Art lovers can visit the Tatra Gallery in a former steam power plant on Hviezdoslavova Street. For relaxation, AquaCity Poprad’s thermal pools and saunas are nearby, and the Poprad-Tatry station connects you to the Tatra Electric Railway for scenic trips to Starý Smokovec, Tatranská Lomnica, and Štrbské Pleso.
