Church of St. Giles in Poprad is one of the town’s most important historical landmarks, standing at the heart of the old square since the 13th century. Built in the early Gothic style, it later absorbed Renaissance and Baroque elements, creating a layered architectural character. An interesting fact is that the church’s tower once served as a fire‑watch point, giving it both a spiritual and practical role in the life of the medieval town. Inside, visitors can admire a beautifully preserved Gothic presbytery with ribbed vaulting and narrow lancet windows that fill the space with soft, coloured light. The main Baroque altar of St. Giles is richly decorated, featuring expressive sculptures and gilded ornamentation. Several side altars display Renaissance and Baroque paintings, while the stone baptismal font and medieval tombstones embedded in the floor offer a direct link to centuries of local history. The church’s interior also preserves fragments of Gothic wall paintings, adding to its quiet, contemplative atmosphere. St. Giles remains a graceful testament to Poprad’s spiritual and artistic heritage.

The Church of St. Giles, known locally as Kostol svätého Egídia, stands in the middle of Námestie svätého Egídia, Poprad’s historic spindle-shaped main square. This early-Gothic Roman Catholic church dates from the late 13th century and is one of the oldest landmarks in the city. Its tall tower is visible across the square and occasionally plays melodies, while inside you can see one of the most extensive Gothic fresco cycles in Slovakia and a unique two-nave structure with a massive central pillar. The tower balcony offers views over the city, and the peaceful square is lined with 18th- and 19th-century Baroque and Classicist burgher houses. Right around the church the square hosts cafés, fountains, and seasonal markets. Just a short walk away is the Tatra Gallery, set in a former steam power plant, showcasing Slovak art and regional works. History lovers can visit Podtatranské múzeum for archaeology and Tatra culture exhibits. The perfectly preserved medieval quarter of Spišská Sobota is about 1.6 km north, with cobbled streets, Renaissance houses, and the Church of St. George.
