Church of St. George Poprad

About

Church of St. George in Poprad is one of the town’s oldest and most atmospheric sacred landmarks, with origins reaching back to the 13th century. Built in the early Gothic style, it once stood at the centre of the medieval settlement of Spišská Sobota, which gives it a strong historical identity. An interesting fact is that the church preserves one of the finest collections of medieval wall paintings in the region, created by several artistic workshops over different centuries. Inside, visitors can admire a harmonious blend of Gothic and Renaissance elements. The main attraction is the Gothic fresco cycle, depicting scenes from the life of Christ and St. George, remarkable for their vivid colours and expressive detail. The wooden Renaissance altar, crafted in the 16th century, stands out for its elegant carving and balanced composition. Other highlights include the stone baptismal font, medieval tombstones embedded in the floor, and the tall, narrow nave that enhances the church’s serene atmosphere. St. George’s Church offers a quiet yet powerful encounter with the spiritual and artistic heritage of old Spiš.

Location

The Church of St. George rises at the heart of Spišská Sobota, a beautifully preserved historic quarter of Poprad. Set on Sobotské námestie, this 13th-century Gothic church is the centerpiece of a Renaissance market square lined with colorful burgher houses from the 16th to 18th centuries. Inside you’ll find five late-Gothic side altars and a main altar crafted in the workshop of Master Pavol of Levoča, one of Slovakia’s most celebrated medieval artists. The church’s treasured wooden altar, magnificent organ, and intimate atmosphere have earned praise from visitors worldwide, and in 2008 it was honored by a visit from Queen Elizabeth II. Stepping out, you’re surrounded by the charm of Spišská Sobota’s cobbled streets. Right beside the church stands a medieval bell tower from 1598 and a Baroque Marian column from 1772, while the former town hall now houses exhibitions of the Podtatranské múzeum. From Spišská Sobota it’s only about 1.5 kilometers to Poprad’s modern center at Námestie svätého Egídia. There you can visit the early-Gothic Church of St. Egidius, browse contemporary art at the Tatra Gallery in a former steam power plant, or relax at AquaCity Poprad’s thermal pools with views of the High Tatras. The Poprad-Tatry station is nearby, connecting you to the Tatra Electric Railway for trips to Starý Smokovec, Tatranská Lomnica, and Štrbské Pleso.
