Konkatedrála Sedembolestnej Panny Márie in Poprad is a young but symbolically rich cathedral, completed in 1998 and dedicated to Slovakia’s patron saint, Our Lady of Sorrows. Its architecture blends clean modern lines with traditional Catholic symbolism, creating a bright, contemplative space that feels markedly different from older Gothic or Baroque churches. Inside, the dominant feature is the expressive main altar with a large sculptural depiction of the Seven Sorrows, carved in a contemporary style that draws the eye upward. The cathedral’s stained‑glass windows are another highlight: vivid, narrative panels that illuminate the interior with shifting colour throughout the day. Look for the window dedicated to the Virgin Mary’s life, one of the most admired works in the building. The cathedral also houses a discreet side chapel used for quiet prayer, a modern pipe organ designed for both liturgical and concert use, and several artworks by Slovak artists reflecting themes of suffering, hope, and national identity. Despite its recent construction, it has quickly become one of Poprad’s most important spiritual landmarks.
