Museum of Povazie region

The Museum of the Považie Region in Žilina is one of the oldest cultural institutions in north‑western Slovakia, founded in 1942 and dedicated to documenting the life, crafts, and history of the Váh River basin. Its main building, a former county house, creates an atmospheric setting where traditional culture meets carefully curated exhibitions. Inside, visitors can explore rich ethnographic displays featuring folk costumes, wooden carvings, ceremonial objects, and tools used by shepherds and craftsmen who shaped the region’s identity. One of the most interesting sections focuses on the Wallachian pastoral culture, showing how mountain communities lived and migrated across the Carpathians. The museum also preserves a notable collection of historical weapons, guild artefacts, and religious sculptures from local churches. A highlight is the archaeological exhibition, which presents finds from prehistoric settlements and medieval Žilina, including pottery, jewellery, and fragments of fortifications.
