Cathedral of the Holy Trinity is one of Žilina’s defining landmarks, instantly recognisable by its tall, slightly leaning Burian Tower, a feature that gives the city skyline its distinctive character. The cathedral itself dates back to the early 15th century, though it has been reshaped many times, blending Gothic foundations with Baroque and later architectural layers that reflect Žilina’s turbulent religious history. Inside, the atmosphere is warm and intimate. The main altar, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, is a richly carved Baroque piece that draws the eye with its gilded details and expressive figures. Several side altars display paintings by notable Slovak and Central European artists, offering a glimpse into the region’s artistic traditions. One of the most interesting elements is the preserved Gothic stonework visible in parts of the nave, a reminder of the church’s medieval origins. Visitors can also admire the cathedral’s collection of liturgical objects, including chalices, vestments, and wooden sculptures that survived fires and reconstructions. The adjacent Burian Tower, though primarily viewed from outside, adds historical depth as a former watchtower and bell tower.
Žilina Slovakia
The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity is located in the historic center of Žilina, Slovakia, on Horný Val Street. It is the most important and oldest building in the town, dating from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. The cathedral stands on elevated ground above Námestie Andreja Hlinku, separated by steps and a balustrade with a statue of Saints Cyril and Methodius. Adjacent to the cathedral stands the separate Burian's Tower, built in the first half of the 16th century, which serves as the cathedral's bell tower and offers excellent views of the preserved medieval part of the town. Nearby tourist attractions include Mariánske námestie (Mariánske Square) with its colorful arcaded burgher houses built on medieval cellars, the old town hall, the 18th-century Church of St. Paul the Apostle with its symmetrical façade and baroque altar, and the Považská Gallery of Art on Námestie Andreja Hlinku. You can also visit the well-preserved medieval Church of St. Stephen the King and the Church of St. Barbara.
