Church of St. Stephen the King

Church of St. Stephen the King in Žilina is a quiet historical gem located in the Závodie district, far from the bustle of the city centre. It is one of the oldest sacred buildings in the region, with origins reaching back to the 13th century. Its simple exterior, shaped by Romanesque and early Gothic elements, reflects the modest rural character of the area long before Žilina grew into a major town. Inside, the church reveals a surprisingly rich artistic heritage. The main attraction is the preserved Gothic fresco fragment depicting St. Stephen the King, a rare example of medieval wall painting in the region. The interior also features a Baroque main altar with expressive sculptural decoration, complemented by side altars that show the evolution of local religious art across centuries. Wooden liturgical objects, including a finely carved pulpit and traditional folk‑style benches, add to the church’s intimate atmosphere. One of the most interesting aspects is the church’s historical cemetery, which once surrounded the building and left behind several preserved gravestones. Together with the church’s ancient stone walls, they create a strong sense of continuity between past and present.
