Dubeň Observation Tower is one of Žilina’s most popular viewpoints, perched on the forested ridge above the city and offering a rewarding destination for hikers. The current tower, completed in 2009, is a modern wooden structure inspired by traditional lookout designs of the Carpathians. Its light, open framework blends naturally with the surrounding landscape, making it a favourite stop for walkers exploring the Dubeň hill. Inside, a series of wooden staircases leads visitors upward through the tower’s geometric lattice. The climb is short but atmospheric, revealing the craftsmanship of the structure and the scent of the surrounding pine forest. At the top platform, sweeping views open in all directions: Žilina’s historic centre, the Váh River valley, and the dramatic peaks of Malá Fatra. On clear days, the panorama stretches surprisingly far, making it one of the best natural viewpoints in the region. One interesting detail is that the tower stands near the site of a former military lookout, continuing a long tradition of watching over the valley from this strategic hill. Today, however, it serves as a peaceful recreational spot rather than a defensive post.

The Dubeň Observation Tower is located on Dubeň Hill (613 meters above sea level) above the village of Teplička nad Váhom, just outside Žilina, Slovakia. The tower stands at nearly 28 meters high and is made of a steel framework clad in wood, with 10 floors offering viewing platforms. There are two routes to reach the lookout tower. From Budatín, you can follow the red hiking trail from Heroes' Square (Námestie Hrdinov) to the tower, which is about 2 kilometers and leads mostly through forest. Alternatively, from the Prípojná public transport stop in Zádubnie, follow the green markers of the educational trail, which takes about 15 minutes uphill along a 1.4-kilometer route. The shortest access is from Žilina-Zádubnie, where you walk down from the bus stop, follow a panel road, and then turn right onto the green hiking trail. After visiting the tower, you can head to Budatín Castle, which houses an exhibition on wirework (tinker trade), the only one of its kind in the world. The castle is surrounded by a beautiful historic park perfect for walking or picnicking. Other nearby attractions include Žilinský hrad (Žilina Castle), Mariánske námestie with its arcaded houses, the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, and Burian's Tower for city views. Malá Fatra National Park is just 15 minutes away for hiking, and day trips can reach Lietava Castle, the wooden village of Čičmany, or Bojnice Castle with its zoo and spa resort.
