Kostol Sedembolestnej Panny Márie

Kostol svätého Juraja in Žilina is a modest yet historically significant church located in the Trnové district, known for its deep medieval roots and strong local identity. Dating back to the 13th century, it is one of the oldest surviving sacral buildings in the wider Žilina area. Its simple stone exterior, shaped by Romanesque and early Gothic influences, reflects the rural character of the settlement that once stood far beyond the city’s boundaries. Inside, the church offers a surprisingly rich artistic atmosphere. The main altar dedicated to St. George features expressive Baroque carving, while side altars and devotional paintings trace the evolution of local religious art across several centuries. One of the most interesting elements is the preserved Gothic stonework around the triumphal arch, a rare reminder of the church’s earliest phase. Wooden furnishings, including a finely crafted pulpit and traditional benches, add warmth to the interior. The churchyard, historically used as a cemetery, contributes to the site’s quiet, contemplative character. Together with the surrounding village architecture, it forms a small but evocative window into Žilina’s medieval past.
