The Festetics Palace in Keszthely is one of Hungary’s most impressive aristocratic residences, a grand Baroque complex built by the Festetics family in the 18th century and later expanded into a lavish, French‑inspired château. Its elegant façade, sweeping courtyards, and landscaped gardens make it the architectural jewel of western Balaton. Inside, the palace offers a richly preserved world of noble life. The highlight is the Helikon Library, one of Hungary’s finest historic libraries, housing tens of thousands of volumes in beautifully carved wooden bookcases. The Mirror Hall, with its gilded stucco and crystal chandeliers, reflects the splendour of aristocratic gatherings and concerts once held here. Visitors can also explore the aristocratic apartments, furnished with original 18th‑ and 19th‑century pieces, including tapestries, porcelain, and portraits that reveal the family’s cultural ambitions.

The palace stands in central Keszthely, just a few minutes’ walk from the town centre and main square (Fő tér). It is about a 10–15 minute walk from the Keszthely train station and bus station, and there is paid parking in the surrounding streets such as Fő tér and Kossuth utca. The palace is set in a large, beautifully maintained park directly on the edge of the urban area, close to Lake Balaton. Inside the palace complex, you can explore the Helikon Castle Museum, the Helikon Library (one of Hungary’s largest and most valuable libraries), the Palm House with a bird park, and the Hunting Museum & Coach Museum, which displays 18th-century horse-drawn carriages. Just outside the palace, Keszthely offers several attractions: the Balaton Museum, which explains the history and culture of Lake Balaton; the Georgikon Farm Museum, showing the region’s agricultural heritage; and unique small museums such as the Marzipan Museum, Erotic Renaissance Wax Museum, and Radio Museum. You can also visit the Fenekpuszta Roman Ruins, the Jewish Cemetery, and the Municipal Beach (Varosi Strand) and Libás Strand for lakeside relaxation.
