Helikonpark

About

The Helikon Park (Helikonpark) in Keszthely is one of the town’s most elegant green spaces, created in the late 19th century as a landscaped public garden closely linked to the cultural life of the Festetics family. Its name honours the Helikon Celebrations, the famous literary gatherings hosted by Count György Festetics, which helped establish Keszthely as a centre of Hungarian culture. The park is designed in a refined, almost aristocratic style: wide lawns, mature trees, and carefully arranged flowerbeds create a calm, stately atmosphere. At its heart stands the Helikon Monument, a striking stone column erected in 1954 to commemorate the literary festivals. The surrounding paths lead visitors past historic statues, shaded benches, and seasonal plantings that change the park’s character throughout the year. While the park is primarily an outdoor space, its charm lies in the details: the old plane trees, some over a century old; the romantic pathways ideal for quiet walks; and the sense of continuity with the nearby Festetics Palace. Helikon Park remains a favourite place for locals to read, relax, and enjoy a peaceful moment in the centre of Keszthely.

Location

Helikon Park is the largest green area of Keszthely, located in the heart of the town on the western shore of Lake Balaton in Hungary, at Sóhaj allé. It sits between the city centre and the lakeside promenade, connecting the two “parts of the city” and is just a few minutes’ walk from both the Main Square (Fő tér) and the Balaton shore. Right next to Helikon Park is the magnificent Festetics Palace (Helikon Castle), the largest and most important landmark of Keszthely, with the Helikon Castle Museum, Helikon Library, Palm House and Bird Park, Hunting Exhibition, and Coach Museum displaying historic horse-drawn carriages. Inside the palace complex, you can also see one of Europe’s largest model railway terrain tables. From the park, you can walk a short distance to the Main Square and visit the Gothic Our Lady of Hungary Parish Church with Hungary’s largest Gothic fresco cycle, then stroll along the lakeside promenade to beaches such as Helikon Beach and Municipal Beach (Varosi Strand). Other nearby attractions include the Georgikon Manor Museum (agricultural history), the Balaton Museum, the unique Snail Shell Parliament (Csigaparlament) – a giant model of the Hungarian Parliament made of snail shells – and several small quirky museums such as the Marzipan Museum, Museum of Puppets, Television and Radio Museum, and Panoptikum and Torment Museum.
