Our Lady of Hungary Church

About

The Our Lady of Hungary Parish Church (Magyarok Nagyasszonya‑templom) is one of Keszthely’s most striking 20th‑century landmarks, built between 1927 and 1930 in an expressive Neo‑Romanesque style. Its tall, slender tower and richly articulated brick façade give it a distinctive silhouette among the town’s older Baroque and historicist buildings. The dedication to the Patrona Hungariae reflects a strong national sentiment of the interwar period, when the church became a symbol of spiritual renewal. Inside, the space is bright and harmonious, shaped by rounded arches and clean architectural lines. The main altar, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, features a graceful statue of Our Lady of Hungary, a focal point for local devotion. The stained‑glass windows are among the church’s most beautiful elements, depicting Hungarian saints and Marian themes in vivid colours that fill the nave with warm light. The side chapels contain expressive 20th‑century artworks, while the organ loft houses a finely crafted instrument used for concerts and liturgical music.
