Balaton Museum

About

The Balaton Museum in Keszthely is the leading institution dedicated to the natural and cultural history of Lake Balaton, offering a rich journey through the region’s geology, archaeology, wildlife, and human settlement. Founded in 1898, it stands in an elegant Neo‑Baroque building whose grand halls give the exhibitions a stately atmosphere. Inside, the museum’s most engaging feature is its comprehensive Balaton history exhibition, tracing everything from ancient Roman villas to the rise of 19th‑century lakeside tourism. The geological displays explain how the lake formed and why its ecosystem is so unique, while the archaeological collection showcases finds from prehistoric settlements and medieval fortifications. A favourite among visitors is the life‑size diorama of Balaton wildlife, presenting fish, birds, and wetland species in vivid detail. The museum also preserves charming relics of early holiday culture, including vintage bathing cabins, postcards, and boating memorabilia, offering a nostalgic look at the lake’s golden age.
