Pöstlingbergbahn-Museum

About

The Pöstlingbergbahn‑Museum celebrates one of Linz’s most charming icons: the Pöstlingbergbahn, one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world. Opened in 1898, it originally climbed the hill using elegant wooden trams that quickly became a symbol of weekend outings and panoramic views over the Danube. The museum, located at the valley station, preserves this heritage with a warm, nostalgic atmosphere. Inside, visitors can see beautifully restored historic carriages, including early electric models with polished wood interiors and brass fittings. Technical displays explain how the railway mastered its steep gradient and how its braking systems evolved over more than a century. Archival photographs trace the line’s transformation from a local curiosity to a modern light‑rail connection after its major renovation in 2009. One of the most engaging features is the chance to step into original tramcars and experience their compact design up close. Interactive elements show how drivers operated the line in different eras, while scale models illustrate the route’s engineering challenges. For railway enthusiasts, the museum offers a rare look at Alpine urban transport history; for casual visitors, it’s a delightful glimpse into Linz’s everyday past.
