Linz Botanical Garden

About

The Linz Botanical Garden is one of Europe’s most beautiful hillside gardens, spread across five hectares on the slopes of the Freinberg. Its elevated position gives it a unique atmosphere: part scientific collection, part peaceful retreat, with sweeping views over the city. More than 10,000 plant species grow here, making it one of Austria’s richest botanical displays. Inside the garden, the five greenhouses are the main highlight. The tropical house bursts with palms, orchids, and lush undergrowth, while the cactus house showcases an impressive array of succulents from the Americas and Africa. The butterfly house, open seasonally, surrounds visitors with delicate species fluttering among flowering plants. Outside, themed areas include alpine rock gardens, a fragrant rose collection, and a Japanese garden that offers a moment of quiet reflection. One fascinating detail is the garden’s focus on conservation: rare and endangered species from Upper Austria are cultivated and studied here. Art installations and seasonal exhibitions add a cultural layer to the natural setting, making each visit different from the last.
