The Kärnten Museum in Klagenfurt is the region’s cultural flagship, recently revitalised to present Carinthia’s history with a fresh, contemporary approach. Housed in the elegant Palais Rudolfinum, it blends classical architecture with modern exhibition design, creating an inviting space where archaeology, folklore, art, and natural history come together. Inside, the permanent exhibition “Carinthia. A Journey Through Time” guides visitors from prehistoric settlements to the present day. Highlights include Iron Age artefacts from the Hallstatt culture, medieval treasures, and objects illustrating the region’s bilingual heritage. One of the most fascinating pieces is the original “Fürstenstein” replica, symbol of Carinthia’s ancient ducal installation ritual. The natural history section showcases Alpine fauna, geological formations, and interactive displays explaining how the landscape around the Wörthersee evolved. Art lovers will appreciate works by Carinthian painters and sculptors, while temporary exhibitions bring in contemporary themes and international perspectives.
Klagenfurt am Wörthersee Austria
The Kärnten Museum, also known as the Landesmuseum Kärnten, is located in the heart of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, the capital of Carinthia in southern Austria. You will find it in the city center on Museumgasse, just a few minutes' walk from the main square. The museum is housed in the historic Rudolfinum building and reopened in 2022 after a full renovation. It presents the natural history, archaeology, art, and cultural heritage of Carinthia, from Roman artifacts and medieval treasures to alpine minerals and regional folklore. Being centrally located, the museum puts you right next to Klagenfurt’s main attractions. Walk out the door and you are already in the Old Town. The Neuer Platz with the famous Lindwurm fountain, the symbol of the city, is only a short stroll away. Around it you will find colorful Renaissance courtyards, the Landhaus with its historic coats of arms hall, and the Cathedral of Klagenfurt. The pedestrian zone has cafés, shops, and baroque facades perfect for exploring on foot. From the city center it is also easy to reach Lake Wörthersee. In summer, the lake is a major draw for swimming, boat rides, and lakeside promenades. The Minimundus miniature park, with models of famous buildings from around the world, and the adjacent Reptilienzoo Happ are popular with families.
