Planetarium Klagenfurt

About

Planetarium Klagenfurt, located beside the lakeside Europapark, is one of Carinthia’s most engaging science attractions, offering immersive journeys through space without ever leaving the ground. Opened in the 1970s and later modernised, it was among the first Austrian planetariums to adopt full‑dome projection technology. An interesting fact is that its dome was engineered with exceptional acoustic precision, allowing both astronomical shows and live music events to feel unusually atmospheric. Inside, visitors experience a rotating programme of shows that explore the night sky, black holes, planetary formation, and distant galaxies. The digital projection system recreates star fields with remarkable clarity, making it possible to see constellations exactly as they appear above Carinthia—or from anywhere else on Earth. Children especially enjoy the themed family shows, which blend storytelling with science. The foyer features interactive exhibits explaining light, gravity, and space exploration, along with scale models that help visualise the Solar System. Combined tickets with neighbouring attractions, such as Minimundus, make it easy to turn a visit into a full day of discovery. Planetarium Klagenfurt is a gateway to the cosmos, offering both education and wonder in an intimate, dome‑shaped theatre.

Planetarium Klagenfurt
Location

Planetarium Klagenfurt sits in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, the capital of Carinthia in southern Austria. You’ll find it inside Europapark, a large recreational area on the eastern shore of Lake Wörthersee. The park location puts the planetarium right between the city center and the lake, making it easy to combine a star show with other sightseeing. It’s a short walk from the main lake promenade and about fifteen minutes on foot from Klagenfurt’s Old Town. The surrounding Europapark is a destination itself. Directly next door is Minimundus, the famous miniature park with over 150 detailed models of world landmarks from St. Peter’s Basilica to the Statue of Liberty. Also within the same park is Reptilienzoo Happ, home to crocodiles, snakes, and tropical lizards. Lake Wörthersee is literally steps away, with the large Strandbad Klagenfurt lido offering swimming, boat rentals, and cafés along one of Austria’s warmest alpine lakes. From the planetarium, the Renaissance-era city center is close by. There you can see the Lindwurm fountain, the city’s dragon symbol, stroll Alter Platz with its pastel buildings, and visit the Landhaus courtyard. The nearby Botanical Garden adds alpine plants and greenhouses to a day of science and nature. With lake views, family attractions, and historic streets all within walking distance, the planetarium makes a great starting point for exploring Klagenfurt am Wörthersee.
