Kreuzbergl Church

Kreuzbergl Church, perched on the wooded hill above Klagenfurt, is one of the city’s most atmospheric pilgrimage sites. Built in the 17th century and later expanded, it blends Baroque devotion with the tranquillity of its natural surroundings. An interesting fact is that the church stands near ancient cult sites, giving the hill a long tradition of spiritual significance long before the Baroque sanctuary appeared. Inside, the church surprises with its warm, intimate Baroque interior. The high altar, dedicated to the Holy Cross, features expressive sculptures and gilded ornamentation that draw the eye upward. Side altars display paintings by Carinthian artists, reflecting the region’s strong devotional art tradition. The vaulted ceiling, decorated with soft frescoes, adds a sense of lightness to the otherwise compact space. A highlight is the adjoining chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, inspired by Jerusalem’s sacred sites and used for Holy Week rituals. Visitors also appreciate the peaceful setting: the church is surrounded by forest paths, viewpoints, and the Kreuzbergl park, making it a favourite destination for quiet reflection.
