Klagenfurt Cathedral

Klagenfurt Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, is one of the city’s most elegant Baroque landmarks, shaped by centuries of rebuilding. Originally a Protestant church in the late 16th century, it became a Catholic cathedral in 1787—an unusual reversal that gives the building a layered identity. Its façade, with soft curves and restrained ornamentation, reflects early Baroque ideals rather than later exuberance. Inside, the cathedral reveals its true splendour. The high altar by Johann Georg Hitzl is a highlight, framed by twisting columns and crowned with a dramatic depiction of the apostles. The side chapels contain richly carved altars, gilded sculptures, and devotional paintings that show the transition from Renaissance clarity to Baroque theatricality. One interesting detail is the pulpit, decorated with symbolic figures representing the virtues of preaching. The vaulted ceiling, painted with delicate frescoes, adds lightness to the otherwise monumental interior. Visitors also notice the impressive organ, whose warm sound fills the nave during concerts and liturgical celebrations.
