Vorarlberg Museum

About

Vorarlberg Museum in Bregenz is one of Austria’s most distinctive regional museums, instantly recognisable by its striking façade of thousands of recessed concrete “bowls,” inspired by traditional milk pails. This modern exterior contrasts beautifully with the museum’s mission: to explore the deep cultural history of Vorarlberg, from prehistoric settlements to contemporary Alpine life. An interesting fact is that during construction, archaeologists uncovered remains from the Roman era, which are now part of the museum’s permanent displays. Inside, visitors find a thoughtfully curated journey through the region’s identity. The archaeology section showcases tools, jewellery, and everyday objects that trace human presence along Lake Constance over millennia. The “vorarlberg. ein making-of” exhibition is a highlight, offering an immersive look at how geography, craftsmanship, and migration shaped the region’s character. The museum also excels in contemporary storytelling, with rotating exhibitions on design, architecture, and social history—reflecting Vorarlberg’s reputation as a centre of innovative timber construction and modern Alpine culture. Upper floors offer panoramic views of Lake Constance, turning the landscape itself into part of the experience.

Location

The Vorarlberg Museum is located in Bregenz, the capital of Austria’s Vorarlberg state. You’ll find it right on the shore of Lake Constance in the city center, next to the harbor. The striking building, known for its facade of concrete flower molds, houses the region’s main collection on history, art, and culture. Because of its lakeside position, the museum is surrounded by Bregenz’s top sights. Directly outside is the harbor promenade with boat cruises that cross Lake Constance to Germany and Switzerland. The world-famous Bregenz Festival lake stage is a short walk east along the shore, where large-scale operas are performed on a floating set in summer. West of the museum, the Pfänderbahn cable car base station is close by. In ten minutes it takes visitors up Mount Pfänder for views over the lake, the Alps, and into four countries. The old town of Bregenz begins just behind the museum. There you can explore the medieval Oberstadt with the Martinsturm, Austria’s largest onion dome, and the Gothic Parish Church of St. Gallus. The Kunsthaus Bregenz, a renowned contemporary art gallery in a glass cube by Peter Zumthor, stands only two blocks away. The harbor also has cafés, the Molo pier, and the Lake Stage exhibition. With the lake, mountains, festival grounds, and historic center all clustered within minutes, the Vorarlberg Museum sits at the cultural heart of Bregenz.
