Seekapelle

Seekapelle, also known as the Lakeside Chapel, is one of Bregenz’s most charming small sanctuaries, set close to the shoreline of Lake Constance. Built in the early 17th century, it originally served as a place of prayer for fishermen and travellers who relied on the lake for their livelihood. Its modest size and simple Baroque design give it a quiet elegance that contrasts beautifully with the open waters beside it. Inside, the chapel reveals a surprisingly rich devotional atmosphere. The central altar features a graceful depiction of the Virgin Mary, framed by soft stucco ornamentation typical of the region. Small votive offerings, left over generations, reflect the community’s gratitude for protection during storms and safe returns from the lake. The wooden benches, narrow nave, and warm light filtering through the small windows create an intimate, contemplative space that invites visitors to pause.
